DESCRIPTION

Mother Nature is a color pencil drawing on medium tooth vellum paper. The work was done using a circular burnishing lawyering technique with minor engraving for additional highlights. Approximately 12 hours of creation.

INTERPRETATION

Mother Nature was drawn by Shawn Malzahn while incarcerated during the spring of 2021 to be given to his mother as a gift for her birthday. The tree is shaped like a woman to depict Mother Nature. The tree and moon reflecting itself in the water shows the interconnectivity of all tings as suggested by the poem written on the backside of this piece:

“As the moon reflects the sun,
So the wave reflects the star,
When mind is made a mirror,
What reflects is who you are.

Happy Birthday dearest mother,
Open thy gift of Eternal Breath,
It dwelleth deep inside thee,
In thy heart; it never left.”
