DESCRIPTION

Family Forever is a color pencil drawing on medium tooth vellum paper. The work was done using a circular burnishing lawyering technique with minor engraving and white oil paint for additional highlights. Approximately 30 hours of creation.

INTERPRETATION

Family Forever was drawn by Shawn Malzahn while incarcerated during the winter of 2021. This piece was created as a “family portrait” for the parents of the artist as a Christmas gift. The individual characters (birds and frog) represent the artist and his parents, and the volcano erupting in the background invokes the overall message meant to be depicted, which is: Family forever, even until the end.
