DESCRIPTION

Day of Dead Girl is a color pencil drawing on medium tooth vellum paper. The work was done using a circular burnishing lawyering technique with minor engraving and white paint for additional highlights. Approximately 30 hours of creation.

INTERPRETATION

Day of Dead Girl was drawn by Shawn Malzahn while incarcerated during the spring of 2020 as an expression of new life and regeneration. The woman admiring the pair of black and red roses symbolizes her understanding and appreciation for life and death, or the coming and going of Life's Love through creation and transformation. The owl is symbolic of the wise One that always watches without worry in the darkness of our own egoic trunks.
